prescription for sarcopeniaDear Friend,

How do you want to age?

You really have two choices… treat aging as a sport and age like a champion or just allow yourself to wither away physically and mentally.

If you are like me and you want to fiercely maintain your independence just in case you live to an advanced age, you will choose the Champion of Aging path.

If you decide to choose the Champion of Aging path, our Barbells and Kung Fu program provides you with a complete solution to competing in the sport of aging.

Why Kung Fu

Barbells and Kung FuFirst, a little bit of history.

The roots of kung fu may be traced back about 1,500 years ago to the Shaolin Temple in the Henan province of China.

It was there that the Buddhist priest Bodhidharma traveled from India to teach at the Shaolin Temple.  There he wrote the texts “Muscle/Tendon Changing” and Marrow/Brain Washing.”

These texts were meant to help Shaolin monks prepare for spiritual development.

Bodhidharma recognized that the monks at the Shaolin Temple were not in good enough physical condition to sit in meditation for long periods of time.

At Shaolin, meditation is viewed as the means to which spiritual enlightenment can be achieved.

At the temple he taught personality purification, meditation, yoga and exercises now referred to as Qigong or Chi Kung.

The training emphasized the integration of physical, mental and spiritual development to optimize results.

This training laid the foundation for what evolved into Shaolin Kung Fu.  The ultimate goal of the Shaolin Tradition is to produce high levels of spiritual awareness.

It wasn’t until later that part of the focus of this training became the kung fu we think of today… a system of combat.

Those combat systems evolved out of a need to protect the Shaolin Temple and themselves from bandits as the stature and wealth of Shaolin grew.

Modern Kung Fu practice

In modern practice, various kung fu systems are sold to the public as a means of learning self-defense, with some emphasis on fitness.

It is recognized that most people do not have hours to spend each day sitting in meditation, and therefore, there is limited emphasis on this training.

With that said, significant health benefits can still be obtained through the practice of kung fu, including…

  • Improved strength, flexibility and mobility
  • Improved coordination and agility
  • Improved cognitive function, discipline and will power
  • Improved ability to relax and rid the mind and body of stress

These benefits are attained through practice of traditional kung fu forms, calisthenics, Qigong exercises, stretching and meditation.

With this in mind, the Champion of Aging can benefit substantially by including kung training into their overall wellness program.

As such, in the presentation of kung fu in this program, the only emphasis on the combat portion of the training is to teach proper technique to correctly perform the forms and to understand the purpose of each movement within the forms.

Barbell Training

The barbell is simply the best tool for developing overall strength.

The reason for this is that the barbell is the easiest tool to use to load weight onto compound exercises that employ natural human movement patterns.

When you review the training methods of athletes that compete in World Strongman, the primary tool they use is the barbell.

This is also the case in other sports where strength and power are required.

This is why barbell training is emphasized in this particular training program, and at Champion of Aging in general.

Building and maintaining strength as we age is critical to maintaining a high quality of life into our advanced years.
