If your desire is to work out at home, you will need certain pieces of equipment.  These include…

  • Olympic Barbell Set
  • Power Rack with Lat pulldown
  • Dumbbells
  • Weight lifting shoes
  • Weight lifting belt
  • A flat bench
  • An adjustable bench
  • Cardio equipment (treadmill, bike, rowing machine, etc.)

Most of the items discussed below are what I have, or similar to, the equipment I have in my own garage gym.

Bowflex Adjustable Dumbbells

I’ve had a pair of Bowflex Adjustable Dumbbells since 2012 and they are still going strong.  The dumbbells pictured to the right are newest version.

This pair starts at 5 pounds and work in increments of 2.5 pounds up to 25 pounds.  From there, they go up to 52.5 pounds in mainly 5 pound increments.

They come with the storage trays seen in the photo.

To adjust the weight, you simply turn the dial on both ends of the dumbbell.

I particularly like the ergonomically designed, non-slip handles.  So even when it is uncomfortably hot in my garage gym, I don’t feel as if these dumbbells will slip out of my hands.

Weight Lifting Shoes

If you intend to embark on a serious weight lifting program that will involve squats, deadlifts, overhead presses and perhaps Olympic style lifts, you will need a pair of weight lifting shoes.

These are an absolute must to provide you with greater stability while performing these lifts.

The shoes I wear are these shoes by Nordic Lifting.  Check them out on Amazon by clicking on the link below the image.

Dominion Weight Lifting Belt

The second most important tool you will need if you intend to get into strength training is a weight lifting belt.

I highly recommend this Dominion Weight Lifting Belt, which I personally use.

You can learn more about it on Amazon by clicking the link under the image.

Olympic Barbell Set

The most important piece of equipment you will need is a barbell and weight plates.

The standard set comes with a 45 pound barbell and 255 pounds of weight plates.  That is a good place to start.

Amazon offers a variety of options.  Click on the link below the image to see what you can find.

Marcy Home Gym Cage

This Marcy Home Gym Cage is what I have in my garage gym.  It is suitable for small spaces and low ceiling clearances (about 7 feet).

It comes with a lat pulldown and seated row attachment, parallel dip bars, multi-grip pull up bar and safety pins.

You can perform a wide variety of exercises with this piece of equipment, including squats, bench press, overhead press, dead lift, pull ups, multi-grip lat pull downs, etc.

It is a durable, but fairly light weight piece of equipment, so if you are a larger person, and you have more space, you will want to go with a larger unit.

Schwinn Recumbent Bike

The piece of cardio equipment I have in my garage gym is this Schwinn Recumbent Bike.

This works perfectly for my Zone 2 and other workouts, and then it has its own programmed workouts you can follow as well.

It has an old school screen, so if you are looking for something more modern, there are other options.

Titan Safety Squat Bar

Over time as I was going through the Starting Strength Novice Linear Progression I realized that my left shoulder did not tolerate the position of the bar on my back for the squat.

Some people also struggle with elbow tendonitis resulting from trying to position the bar properly.

I finally relented and purchased a Titan Safety Squat Bar so I could continue to incorporate the squat into my training and it has been a true game changer.

If you struggle with shoulder mobility and elbow tendonitis, I highly recommend you pick up one of these safety squat bars.
